Copper Clouds One belongs to Grid Cents, the opening triptych of AdjaCENTS and its most literal statement: each frame of a moving sky is reduced to 625 brightness values on a 25 × 25 grid, and each value is answered by the nearest cent in shade. No further rules. Clouds become mass, open sky turns to lighter copper, and the surface flickers as the matching shifts from frame to frame.
AdjaCENTS is a series of twenty-one animated works, seven triptychs of three, assembled entirely from Rutherford Chang’s CENTS: ten thousand one-cent coins taken out of circulation, photographed, inscribed as Bitcoin Ordinals, and then melted into a single block of copper. The series is an homage that borrows the coins back. A shared palette of 484 cents, ordered from darkest to brightest, supplies every tile. No image is re-inscribed; each work contributes only arrangement.
Notably, the artwork exists only while it is watched. Opening the piece fetches the palette, the frame table, and all 484 coins directly from the chain. The animation is assembled at that moment, in the viewer’s browser, and nowhere else. Nothing of the rendered work is ever written to a file, a server, or the chain. Close the tab, and the assembly disperses: what remains are the instructions and the cents themselves, waiting at their addresses to be borrowed again.
