This year’s member group exhibition at the Maison des arts et de la culture de Brompton explored the rich and challenging theme “Le figuratif défiguré” (The Disfigured Figurative). Artists were invited to reconsider the figurative — not merely as a representation of the visible world, but as a tension between familiarity and transformation, recognition and abstraction.
Disturbing Volatility (2020) by Martin Lukas Ostachowski
My artwork Disturbing Volatility was selected for this year’s exhibition as the only new media piece. The work is a looping animation composed of 60 aerial video fragments that echo the unstable nature of cryptocurrency markets. Through layered motion and shifting perspectives, Disturbing Volatility reflects on the unease and unpredictability that define this digital financial landscape. As the curatorial text framed it (translated from French):
All figuration, however faithful it may be, is a distortion of reality. A represented subject is fixed, defined, and simplified by the artist who portrays it. The moment this representation is altered, we move away from the known — even from the recognizable. A tension then arises between “what was” and “what becomes,” between a degraded figure and a form in creation. Does the transformed figurative, by its changed nature, better represent a fragment of reality?

The Le figuratif défiguré group exhibition took place between November 19th to December 20th, 2020.
